Many of us have considered starting our own consulting firm and some of us have hung out a consulting shingle for short periods of time and/or during periods of transition, but fewer of us have actually made the leap (of faith) to formally (or informally) open up shop. Nevertheless, under the right circumstances and with adequate support, establishing your own consulting firm or becoming an independent consultant can be a highly rewarding career path.

In this panel discussion, we will hear from four Wharton alum who have successfully taken this road less traveled about the circumstances under which they embarked on the journey, critical success factors, lessons learned along the way, and options to support and enhance your efforts, i.e., you don’t have to “go it alone” to be a successful independent consultant.

Sarah_Frew_Headshot_2024_(002).jpgSarah Frew, WG'11, became an independent consultant in 2015, founding and serving as Managing Partner of Go Far Advisors after a long and winding career that started after she earned her Ph.D. in Cancer Biology from MIT. She spent the early 2000’s working on the role of biotech and biopharma in emerging markets, including spending time at a global health think tank in Toronto. She then served as Director, Commercial and Business Development for a small, Philadelphia-area company, TetraLogic Pharmaceuticals, that went public in 2013. After spending a year as Director, Corporate Contracts and Alliances at the Penn Center for Innovation, where she met many cutting-edge researchers, Sarah started consulting for many of them who reached out to her for assistance as an independent consultant and founded Go Far Advisors as her business grew through word of mouth and her extensive network.

Tolga.jpgTolga Vural, WG'96, founded Aegean Associates, a growth-focused management consulting firm, in 2012, after a long and successful career as a growth strategist in management and advisory capacities in a range of industries in and for a variety of companies including Oliver Wyman, Booz Allen, Deloitte/Braxton, RELX Group/LexisNexis, Publicis Groupe/Digitas, and Heidrick & Struggles/Decision Strategies International.  Aegean partners with clients across industries, including life sciences and pharmaceuticals, in the development and execution of results-driven strategy, sales and marketing, communications, organizational development, and change management initiatives. Aegean leverages independent consultants in many of its projects and also partners with other consultancies in the delivery of its client engagements.

Michael_R_1.JPGMichael Rovinsky, WG'86, founded Integrity Consulting Group, a boutique healthcare consulting firm specializing in strategic, business, and regulatory planning; ambulatory medical facility planning and development; hospital/physician alignment; and partnership development, in 1998. Previously, he had worked at two of the then Big-8 accounting/consulting firms, Ernst & Whinney and KPMG Peat Marwick, and three small to mid-sized consulting firms. Michael has taken a few detours from Integrity Consulting Group over the years, serving as Executive Director of Strategic Planning for a national, fully integrated, payer/provider company; Director for another mid-sized consulting firm; and Associate Principal for a healthcare architecture and design firm, but he always finds his way back to Integrity Consulting Group.
